That premise drives the design of Zapier, Make, n8n, and nearly every other workflow automation tool on the market. Build it, trigger it, forget it.
Relay.app rejects that premise entirely.
I spent three months testing Relay.app with a ten-person operations team across four departments, content, sales, customer success, and finance. We built 43 workflows, processed over 15,000 runs, and dealt with every scenario from smooth approvals to missed notifications to edge cases the platform handled clumsily. My job in this review is to tell you what actually happened, not what the marketing copy promises.
The short version: Relay.app has genuinely cracked a problem that established platforms either ignore or handle badly, how do you keep humans meaningfully involved in automated processes without creating friction that makes the automation worthless? Their answer, which they call "human-in-the-loop" automation, is elegant in concept and mostly successful in execution.
The long version is more complicated, and that's what this review is for.
My testing framework evaluates automation platforms across eight dimensions: ease of use, workflow building capability, integration breadth, collaboration features, AI functionality, pricing value, support quality, and real-world ROI. Relay.app scores wildly differently across these dimensions, exceptional in some, mediocre in others, and genuinely weak in a few. Understanding which dimensions matter for your use case is the key to deciding whether Relay.app belongs in your stack.
Founded in 2021, Relay.app is a young company still finding its edges. That matters. Some of what I'll describe as weaknesses are almost certainly temporary growing pains. Some are more structural. I'll try to distinguish between the two throughout this review.
Reality Check
If you're evaluating Relay.app against Zapier for a simple, fully automated data-sync use case, this review will probably steer you away. If you're evaluating it for a content approval workflow or a deal review process where you've previously used email chains and Slack threads to coordinate human decisions, this review will likely steer you toward it with enthusiasm.
2. What Is Relay.app? Understanding the Platform

Relay.app is a collaborative workflow automation platform built around what its founders call "human-in-the-loop" automation. The company was founded in 2021 and is backed by notable investors in the productivity and SaaS space. As of this writing, the platform is still in its growth phase, it has the energy and design sensibility of a well-funded startup that knows what problem it's solving, even if the feature set isn't yet as broad as category leaders.
The core insight behind Relay.app is that most real business processes aren't fully automatable. They have moments that genuinely require human judgment, a manager who needs to approve a contract before it goes to a client, an editor who needs to review AI-generated content before it publishes, a customer success rep who needs to assess whether a churning customer situation is recoverable before an automated retention email goes out. Traditional automation platforms either ignore these moments (forcing teams to build awkward half-automations that hand off to email threads) or treat them as bugs to be engineered around.

Where Relay.app sits in the competitive landscape: it's not trying to replace Zapier or Make for fully automated processes. It's trying to replace email threads, Slack messages, and manual task handoffs for processes that need both automation and human oversight. That's a meaningfully different value proposition, and it's one that most other platforms aren't serving well.
Best For
Operations teams, content teams, and sales organizations that currently manage collaborative processes through a patchwork of emails, Slack threads, and spreadsheet trackers.

3.1 Free Plan - Genuinely Useful for Evaluation

The free plan gives you 100 runs per month across a maximum of three active workflows. Human task steps are included at the free tier, which is genuinely generous and important for evaluating whether the platform's core feature works for your use case before paying anything.
Key Limitations
100 runs per month evaporates quickly in a real business context. Even a modest content approval workflow running 10 pieces per week hits that ceiling in two and a half weeks. The three-workflow cap means you can't meaningfully test multiple processes simultaneously. AI steps are not available on the free plan, which limits how well you can evaluate the AI-plus-human combination that is arguably Relay.app's best use case.
Best For
Evaluating whether human-in-the-loop automation solves your specific problem before committing to paid. One well-chosen workflow tested over 30 days will tell you everything you need to know.
Reality Check
I evaluated Relay.app for two weeks on the free plan before moving to a paid pilot. The free plan was sufficient to confirm the core concept worked for our content approval process. It was not sufficient to evaluate performance at real workload, AI step behavior, or collaboration at team scale.
3.2 Team Plan ($9.99/user/month) - The Primary Option for Most Teams

The Team plan is $9.99 per user per month billed annually. Monthly billing is available at a modest premium. This is where Relay.app becomes genuinely useful for real work.
What's Included
Unlimited active playbooks, 1,000 runs per month per user (or pooled across the team, confirm current policy at signup), all integrations in the catalog, human task steps with full configuration options, AI steps for content generation and data processing, team collaboration features, Slack integration for task notifications, and email support.
Key Limitations
The 1,000 monthly run allowance sounds substantial but requires monitoring for active teams. A ten-person team building 15-20 workflows can approach this limit if workflows are running frequently. Audit logging is not available at this tier, which matters for compliance-conscious teams. Advanced routing options for human tasks (priority queuing, SLA tracking) are not present.
Best For
Teams of 3-15 people building 5-20 workflows that involve human approval steps, content processes, or collaborative review workflows. This is the plan most teams will use long-term.
Reality Check
Our ten-person pilot team ran 43 workflows at this tier. We approached but didn't exceed the run limit. The cost, $99.90 per month for ten users, felt fair given the time saved on our content approval and deal review processes.
Hidden Costs
Relay.app's per-user model means adding team members adds cost immediately. If your workflows involve occasional approvers, executives who approve deals once a week, say, those users still count toward your per-user cost. Budget for this during planning.
3.3 Pro Plan ($29.99/user/month) - Power User Features

Key Limitations
5,000 runs is generous, but the per-user cost escalates quickly for larger teams. A twenty-person team on Pro costs $599.80 per month, at that spend level, you're benchmarking against Make, which offers substantially more integration depth and workflow complexity for comparable cost.
Best For
Teams in regulated industries where audit trails are required (legal, financial services, healthcare-adjacent), teams processing high workflow volumes, or organizations where the Pro support tier is worth the cost differential.
Reality Check
Most teams I'd recommend Relay.app to won't need the Pro plan initially. Start on Team, validate your workflows, understand your actual run volumes, and upgrade if audit logging or run capacity becomes a real need.
Hidden Costs
If your compliance requirements extend beyond audit logging, SOC 2, HIPAA, or enterprise SSO, verify Relay.app's current certification status before committing to Pro. The compliance story is still maturing.
3.4 Pricing Comparison Table

3.5 Understanding the Per-User Cost Reality
Relay.app's per-user pricing model deserves specific attention because it can create surprising cost dynamics compared to platforms like Zapier (task-based) or Make (operations-based).
If you have a compact, dedicated automation team, say, four people who build and manage workflows, the per-user cost is extremely competitive. $39.96/month for four users on the Team plan is lower than a mid-tier Zapier Professional subscription.
But here's where it gets complicated: in Relay.app's model, the humans who participate in workflows, the approvers, reviewers, and contributors, may also need to be counted as users. An executive who approves deals in Relay.app needs a seat. An editor who reviews content needs a seat. As the number of workflow participants grows, the per-user cost grows with it.
Pro Tip
Before you sign up, map out exactly who will be taking actions in your workflows (not just who builds them). That list is your real user count. Multiply by $9.99 for your true Team plan cost.
4. Key Features Deep Dive
4.1 Human-in-the-Loop Steps. The Core Innovation

This is the feature that makes Relay.app worth evaluating. Everything else on the platform is reasonably well done but not distinctive. Human-in-the-loop steps are something genuinely different.
What It Does: A human task step pauses workflow execution at a defined point, identifies the right person or people to act, sends them a notification with relevant context, presents them with structured options for their response, and waits for their input before the workflow resumes automatically.
How It Works: You add a human task step anywhere in a playbook, at the beginning for intake, in the middle for review, at the end for approval. You configure: who gets notified (a specific person, a role-based assignment, round-robin across a team, or dynamic assignment based on workflow data). You configure what context they see (data pulled from previous steps, a contract summary, a content draft, a customer profile). You configure what responses they can give (approve/reject binary, a dropdown of choices, free text input, or a combination). When the step triggers, Relay.app notifies the assignee via Slack, email, or the in-app notification center. The assignee sees the context, makes their choice, and the workflow continues automatically based on their response.
Real-World Use Case: Our content approval workflow runs like this. A Notion integration triggers when a writer marks a document as "ready for review." Relay.app pulls the document content and metadata. An AI step summarizes the document and checks it against our style guidelines, returning a checklist of potential issues. The workflow then creates a human task assigned to our managing editor: here's the draft, here's the AI's feedback, your options are Approve, Request Revisions, or Reject. The editor reviews in Relay.app's task interface (which shows the full document and the AI checklist inline), makes their decision, optionally adds a comment, and submits. If approved, the workflow automatically schedules the post in our CMS, creates the social distribution tasks in Asana, and notifies the writer. Total editor time: three to five minutes. Previous process (email thread + manual CMS entry): fifteen to twenty minutes plus context-switching overhead.
What's Missing: Response time tracking and SLA enforcement are not present at the Team tier. If an editor sits on an approval for three days, Relay.app doesn't automatically escalate or alert. For processes with time-sensitive approvals, this is a real gap. The approval interface is clean and functional but not deeply customizable, you can't embed a rich editing environment, only view and comment.
Pro Tip
Structure your human task steps so the assignee has everything they need to decide without leaving Relay.app. If they need to open five other tabs to have enough context to act, task completion rates will drop and the bottleneck moves rather than resolves. Front-load context in the task configuration.
4.2 Multiplayer Workflows. Genuine Collaboration Orchestration

Most automation platforms handle the "single operator" model well. One person builds the automation, one system triggers it, one outcome is produced. Relay.app is designed from the ground up for the "multiple contributors" model that characterizes most real organizational processes.
What It Does: Assign different workflow steps to different team members. One person starts the process by providing information. A second person reviews and adds context. A third person approves and triggers the downstream automation. Relay.app orchestrates the entire sequence, tracks who has acted and who hasn't, and keeps the workflow moving.
How It Works: In playbook configuration, each human task step has independent assignee settings. Step one might go to the sales rep who initiated the deal. Step two might route to their manager. Step three might go to whoever is on finance review rotation that week. You can mix static assignments (always goes to Sarah in Finance) with dynamic assignments (goes to whoever is the deal owner based on a CRM field) in the same workflow.
Real-World Use Case: Our deal review playbook involves three sequential humans. The sales rep submits the deal by filling out a Relay.app intake form with deal size, terms, and special pricing requests. This triggers the playbook, which automatically pulls the account history from HubSpot and formats a deal summary. The sales manager gets a human task with the summary and three options: Approve standard terms, Escalate for legal review, or Request more information from rep. If approved, finance gets an automatic notification to process the payment setup. If escalated, our legal contact gets a separate task. The whole process that previously lived in email threads now runs in Relay.app with a full audit trail and average cycle time reduced from 2.3 days to under 6 hours.
What's Missing: Parallel human task steps, where two people need to act simultaneously and the workflow only continues when both have responded, are not currently supported in a native, clean way. For our deal review workflow we needed sequential steps, which works. For use cases requiring parallel sign-off (both manager and legal must approve simultaneously), you'll need a workaround.
Reality Check
Multiplayer workflows sound complex to configure, but Relay.app's interface makes them genuinely approachable. I had our most non-technical team member building a two-person approval workflow within an hour of first using the platform.
4.3 AI Steps. Practical, Not Performative

AI features in automation platforms often feel bolted-on, present to check a box on a feature comparison table. Relay.app's AI steps feel more considered than most, specifically because they're designed to work in tandem with human judgment rather than replace it.
What It Does: AI steps use large language models to process information within your workflow. You can generate text content, summarize data, classify inputs into categories, extract structured information from unstructured text, draft responses, or perform custom analysis. The output from an AI step flows into subsequent steps, either feeding into another automated action or presenting context to a human task step.
How It Works: You configure an AI step with a prompt. The prompt can reference data fields from earlier steps using Relay.app's variable system, so your prompt might say "Here is a customer complaint: {{complaint_text}}. Classify this as: billing issue, technical problem, or general feedback. Then draft a professional response." The AI processes the prompt and the step outputs the classification and the draft. Both outputs then become available as variables for downstream steps.
Real-World Use Case: Our customer escalation workflow uses AI in three places. First, when a support ticket is tagged as escalated, an AI step reads the full ticket history and produces a severity classification (P1/P2/P3) with a two-sentence rationale. Second, an AI step drafts a response the CSM can review and edit in their human task step. Third, after resolution, an AI step generates a summary of what happened and what was resolved, which automatically populates our knowledge base. The CSM's time on a typical escalation dropped from 45 minutes to about 12, with the AI handling the reading, categorizing, and drafting.
What's Missing: Model selection is limited compared to dedicated AI platforms, you can't swap in specific models or fine-tune behavior with system prompts in the way that Make's AI modules or dedicated AI platforms allow. For nuanced classification tasks, I found the AI steps occasionally needed several iterations of prompt refinement. The functionality is solid for common use cases but doesn't offer the depth of control that engineering-forward teams might want.
Best For
Content teams using AI to draft and summarize, support teams using AI to classify and draft, and operations teams using AI to extract structured data from messy inputs before humans review.
Caution
AI steps consume additional run credits in some configurations. Verify the current credit consumption model before building heavily AI-dependent workflows at scale.
4.4 Playbook Builder. Clean but Limited on Complexity

The playbook builder is Relay.app's workflow construction interface. It's step-list-based rather than visual-canvas-based, workflows are represented as a vertical sequence of steps rather than a freeform diagram. This is a conscious design choice that prioritizes clarity over power.
What It Does: Lets you assemble workflow steps in sequence, configure each step's settings, add conditional branches for if/then logic, and define the flow of data between steps using a variable system.
How It Works: You start with a trigger, either a schedule (run daily at 9am), a form submission, an app event (new row in Google Sheets, new deal in HubSpot), or a manual trigger (a team member starts the playbook manually). You add steps below it: automated actions, AI steps, human task steps, or conditional branches. Each step can reference outputs from all previous steps using Relay.app's {{variable}} syntax.
Real-World Use Case: Our weekly content calendar review playbook runs on a Monday schedule trigger, pulls the week's content calendar from Notion, uses an AI step to identify any posts missing required assets (featured image, meta description, social copy), creates a human task for whoever manages the editorial calendar showing the gaps found, and then, based on their response, either creates Asana tasks for the missing items or sends a summary to Slack.
What's Missing: The step-list format becomes limiting for complex workflows with multiple parallel branches or deeply nested conditional logic. Zapier and especially Make handle this better with their canvas-based interfaces. Relay.app's builder is excellent for linear and lightly branched workflows but gets unwieldy as complexity grows. There is no visual "zoom out" view that shows you the whole workflow structure at a glance, a meaningful omission for anything beyond eight to ten steps.
Pro Tip
Keep individual playbooks focused on one process. If you find yourself building a workflow with more than eight to ten steps and multiple branches, consider breaking it into two linked playbooks. Relay.app handles this better than it handles one mega-workflow.
4.5 Integrations, 100+ Apps, But Coverage Gaps Exist
Relay.app currently connects to 100+ applications. This is the platform's most significant competitive weakness by a direct comparison to Zapier (8,000+) or even Make (1,000+). It's worth being honest about what that difference means in practice.
What's Covered Well: The major productivity and business operations stack is mostly present. Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail, Calendar), Slack, Notion, HubSpot, Salesforce, Jira, Asana, Airtable, Stripe, and most tools that medium-to-large operations teams use daily are available. If your team runs on a mainstream stack, you're probably fine.
Where the Gaps Hurt: Niche industry tools, regional CRMs, specialized marketing platforms, and anything outside the standard SaaS layer often aren't available. If your team uses ActiveCampaign, Keap, Pipedrive, Zoho, Intercom, Zendesk, or dozens of other common-but-not-top-20 tools, you may find key integrations missing.
Webhooks as an Escape Hatch: Relay.app supports inbound webhooks and outbound HTTP requests, which means technically-comfortable teams can connect to tools without native integrations. This works, but it adds configuration complexity that undercuts the platform's ease-of-use positioning.
Reality Check
In our three-month test, we hit integration gaps twice. One tool in our stack (a specialized HR platform) didn't have a native integration. We used a webhook workaround that took about four hours to set up, functional but annoying. The second gap was a missing trigger type in an existing integration: we could take actions in HubSpot but couldn't trigger on a specific event type we needed. We worked around it with a Zapier-to-Relay.app handoff for that one workflow, which felt embarrassing but was pragmatically fine.
Best For
Teams whose entire stack appears in Relay.app's integration catalog and who don't need to worry about the long tail of app connections.
Caution
Audit your full app stack against Relay.app's integration catalog before committing to the platform. The integration gaps are the most common reason teams can't fully adopt Relay.app as their primary automation tool.
4.6 Notifications and Task Management. Solid Core, Some Rough Edges

When human task steps fire, Relay.app needs a reliable way to get those tasks in front of the right people. The notification system is functional and mostly smooth, but has gaps that will matter depending on your team's working patterns.
What It Does: Sends notifications via Slack (direct message), email, and the Relay.app in-app notification center when a human task is assigned to a team member. The Relay.app task inbox aggregates all pending tasks for a user in one place.
How It Works: Notification channels are configured at the playbook level and can be customized per step. For a given human task step, you might configure it to send a Slack DM and also create an in-app notification, but not send an email (to avoid noise). Assignees receive a notification with a preview of the task context and a link that opens the full task in Relay.app.
What's Missing: Microsoft Teams integration for notifications is absent as of this writing, a meaningful gap for enterprise teams on the Microsoft stack. There's no native mobile app for reviewing and acting on tasks from a phone; mobile workflows run through Relay.app's mobile-optimized web interface, which works but isn't as frictionless as a native app. Escalation rules, automatically reassigning or alerting if a task hasn't been acted on within N hours, are not available at the Team tier, which means time-sensitive workflows require manual monitoring.
Reality Check
Our team is Slack-heavy, so Relay.app's Slack notification integration worked seamlessly. Team members generally responded to human tasks within two to three hours during business hours. The one workflow that required faster turnaround (a time-sensitive customer escalation process) was hampered by the lack of escalation rules, we had to add a separate Slack reminder workflow built in Zapier to compensate. That kind of hybrid stack is inelegant.
4.7 Mobile Experience. Functional But Not First-Class

Relay.app does not have a native iOS or Android app. Workflow management and human task responses are handled through a mobile-optimized web experience.
What Works: The mobile web interface is clean and responsive. Viewing and responding to human tasks, the most common mobile action, works reliably. Approvals that require a simple choice (approve/reject, select from a dropdown) are genuinely easy on mobile.
What Doesn't Work Well: Reviewing longer context items (a full contract, a detailed customer history, a multi-section content brief) on mobile is cumbersome. The interface is designed for focused task response, not for reading dense information. For workflows where human task assignees need to review substantial materials before deciding, mobile completion is probably not realistic.
Best For
Quick approvals where the assignee already has context outside the platform and just needs to formally record their decision.
Caution
If your workflows involve human tasks where the assignee will be mobile-first, field reps, traveling managers, remote workers with limited desk time, test the mobile experience specifically for your most critical workflows before committing.
5. Relay.app Pros: The Genuine Strengths

I've now tested eight automation platforms in depth over the past two years. Relay.app is the only one that treats human involvement in workflows as a first-class design primitive rather than an afterthought. The human task step is not a workaround, a webhook-to-Google-Form hack, or a third-party integration, it's native, polished, and designed with genuine care.
The experience of being on the receiving end of a Relay.app human task is noticeably better than any approval-ish mechanism I've used in other platforms. The context is right there. The options are clear. The response is one click for simple decisions or a short form for complex ones. It takes thirty seconds for a straightforward approval. That friction level actually gets adopted by busy people, which is the real test.
The AI Plus Human Combination Works in Practice
The pairing of AI steps with human review steps is where Relay.app shows its clearest differentiation. The design pattern of "AI does the heavy lifting, human provides the judgment call" is something any good operations person would design if they were building workflows from scratch. Relay.app makes this pattern easy to implement.
In our content workflow, the AI step's checklist against style guidelines caught issues in roughly 30% of drafts. The editor's job shifted from "read everything carefully" to "review the AI's concerns and decide whether they matter." That's a better use of editorial judgment. The AI didn't replace the editor, it focused the editor's attention on what needed attention.
Affordable for Small, Collaborative Teams
At $9.99 per user per month, Relay.app's Team plan is priced fairly for what it delivers. A five-person team building a solid content approval and deal review workflow pays $49.95 per month. The time savings on just one well-designed approval workflow will return that investment within days.
For comparison, solving the same problem with Zapier requires building awkward webhook-based approval mechanisms and paying for separate tools. The Relay.app approach is cleaner and costs less at small team sizes.
Modern, Well-Designed Interface
Relay.app's interface is polished and approachable. For a platform founded in 2021, the design quality is comparable to, and in some respects better than, tools that have been on the market for a decade. The playbook builder is clear. The task inbox is clean. Onboarding is guided without being patronizing.
New team members who have never used workflow automation before could start building simple playbooks within an afternoon. That accessibility is real.
First-Person Ownership of Workflows
Because Relay.app workflows are explicitly designed to involve named humans, the platform creates natural accountability that fully automated workflows lack. When something goes wrong with a fully automated Zapier workflow, it's hard to know whose job it is to fix it. When a Relay.app playbook has a problem, it's visible, there's a human task sitting in someone's inbox that hasn't been completed, or a step that failed with a named assignee. The "who is responsible" question has a visible answer.
