I've spent seven months evaluating Salesforce across a 35-person sales organization with two distinct business units, enterprise sales with 6-month deal cycles and mid-market sales with 30-day cycles. We managed 25,000+ accounts, tracked 8,000+ opportunities, built custom objects for partner management, configured territory-based routing, and implemented Einstein AI for lead scoring. The evaluation required a part-time Salesforce administrator and a one-time $15,000 implementation consulting engagement.
Let me be direct about what I found: Salesforce can do literally anything you need a CRM to do. That's not hyperbole, the platform's customization depth is genuinely unlimited. Custom objects, custom fields, custom workflows, custom code (Apex), custom interfaces (Lightning Components), custom integrations, custom everything. If you can describe a business process, Salesforce can model it.
The equally honest flipside: that unlimited power creates unlimited complexity. The learning curve is steep. Implementation requires professional help. Ongoing administration is a dedicated role. And the pricing, which starts at $25/user but realistically lands at $165-330/user for meaningful features, adds up fast when you multiply by headcount.
My testing framework evaluates CRM platforms across customization depth, sales process support, reporting and analytics, integration ecosystem, ease of adoption, implementation complexity, and total cost of ownership. Salesforce scored at the absolute top for customization and ecosystem but lower on ease of adoption and cost predictability. It's the right CRM for the right organization, and disastrously wrong for organizations that don't need its power.

This platform architecture is why Salesforce dominates enterprise CRM. When a pharmaceutical company needs to track clinical trials alongside sales opportunities, they build a custom object. When a manufacturing company needs to connect CRM data to their ERP, MuleSoft handles the integration. When a financial services firm needs compliance-specific workflows, Apex code implements the logic. No other CRM provides this level of extensibility.

Salesforce Starter Suite (formerly Essentials) provides basic CRM at $25/user/month for up to 325 users. You get account and contact management, opportunity tracking, customizable reports, email integration, and a mobile app. The interface is simplified compared to full Salesforce, making it more accessible for small teams.
We tested Starter with a 5-person sub-team. The core CRM worked fine for basic deal tracking, but the limitations appeared quickly: no workflow automation, no custom objects, no API access, limited report customization, and no AppExchange app installation. Starter is Salesforce's answer to "I want Salesforce but I'm small"—it works, but it's Salesforce with training wheels.
3.2 Professional ($80/user/month) - Real Salesforce

At $80/user/month, Professional unlocks what most people think of as "Salesforce": customizable sales processes, pipeline management, forecasting, collaborative forecasting, quotes and orders, and basic automation through Flow. You can also access the AppExchange and build custom reports.
This is where Salesforce becomes genuinely powerful. Our mid-market sales team (15 people) ran on Professional, and the customizable sales process, with stage-specific fields, validation rules, and approval workflows, enforced a disciplined pipeline management approach that our previous CRM (HubSpot) couldn't replicate at the same level of granularity.
What's Missing: No advanced automation (the most powerful Flow features require Enterprise). No custom objects beyond the defaults. No sandbox environments for testing. No API access beyond basic. For many growing companies, Professional's limitations push them to Enterprise faster than expected.
3.3 Enterprise ($165/user/month) - The Sweet Spot

Enterprise at $165/user/month is where most serious Salesforce deployments live, and it's the tier I'd recommend for any organization committed to the platform. You get full workflow automation through Flow Builder, custom objects (model any data type), sandboxes for safe testing, advanced reporting with dashboards, territory management, and full API access.
Our enterprise sales team (20 people) ran on Enterprise, and the custom objects capability was the feature that justified the price premium. We built a Partner object to track channel partners, a Product Configuration object for complex quoting, and a Competitive Intelligence object that linked competitive data to opportunity records. None of these were possible on Professional.
Best For
Organizations with 20-500 sales users, complex sales processes, and the budget and administration resources to leverage Salesforce's full capabilities. This is the "real" Salesforce experience.

Salesforce's account and opportunity management is the benchmark against which every other CRM is measured, and after seven months of daily use, I understand why. The data model is more sophisticated than what you get in any other CRM, and that sophistication serves organizations with complex sales processes.
An Account in Salesforce isn't just a company name with contact info. It's a hub that connects Contacts (people at the company), Opportunities (deals in progress), Cases (support tickets), Activities (calls, emails, meetings), Partners, Products, Notes, Files, and any custom objects you've created. Our account records linked to 15+ related objects, and the 360-degree view gave our sales reps and account executives context that no other CRM provided at the same depth.
Opportunities track through customizable sales stages with field-level validation at each stage. Our enterprise pipeline had 8 stages: Prospecting, Qualification, Discovery, Solution Design, Proposal, Negotiation, Legal Review, and Closed Won/Lost. Each stage required specific fields. Discovery stage required a completed "Discovery Notes" field and a "Decision Maker Identified" checkbox. The forecasting system aggregates opportunity data into projections by rep, team, territory, and time period. This is Salesforce's defining capability and the reason enterprise organizations choose it over simpler alternatives. The platform layer allows you to model any data type, automate any process, and build any interface.
Custom objects let you extend Salesforce beyond standard CRM. We created a "Partner" object to track channel partners with fields for partner tier, certification status, territory, and revenue attribution. A "Competitive Intelligence" object stored competitor information linked to opportunities. A "Product Configuration" object handled complex multi-product deals with pricing rules. Each object had its own page layouts, validation rules, and automation, and each integrated seamlessly with standard Account and Opportunity objects.
Flow Builder (which replaced Process Builder and Workflow Rules) automates business processes visually. We built flows for lead assignment (routing leads to reps based on territory, company size, and industry), opportunity stage automation (sending Slack notifications when deals entered negotiation), data enrichment (updating account records when new information was added), and approval processes (routing high-value deals to management for approval before contracts were sent).
