n8n Cloud counts executions per workflow trigger, not per node. A workflow with 20 nodes triggered once = 1 execution. But a workflow triggered 1,000 times = 1,000 executions regardless of complexity. High-frequency triggers (like webhooks receiving thousands of events daily) can exhaust monthly limits quickly.

How It Works: Build a workflow, mark it as a sub-workflow, define input parameters, and call it from any other workflow using the Execute Workflow node. The sub-workflow runs, processes data, and returns results to the calling workflow.
Real-World Use Case: We built a "data enrichment" sub-workflow that takes an email address, queries Clearbit, falls back to Hunter.io, and returns enriched contact data. This sub-workflow is called by five different main workflows, lead processing, customer onboarding, support ticket routing, sales outreach, and reporting. What's Missing: Error propagation from sub-workflows to parent workflows could be clearer. Debugging across workflow boundaries requires switching between tabs.

Real-World Use Case: Our CRM sync workflow retries API rate limit errors (429) up to 5 times with exponential backoff.
